Lo sciacallo conquistò il mondo della letteratura, al quale si ispira la serie TV di Sky Original con Eddie Redmayne. Un possibile sequel andrà a stravolgere completamente il messaggio, e le finalità di ciò che aveva raccontato l'autore britannico, Frederick Forsyth. Frederick Forsyth scrisse la prima bozza de Il giorno dello sciacallo nel 1965, quando lavorava alla BBC come reporter: giornalista inviato spesso al fronte, in quel periodo era in Biafra, a seguire la guerra in Nigeria, ed entra in contatto con numerosi mercenari. Questi diventeranno i protagonisti di un altro suo romanzo, I mastini della guerra, ma a quell'idea dello sciacallo resta molto affezionato. Tornato a Londra, però, Forsyth viene accusato di aver raccontato la guerra in Nigeria in maniera poco obiettiva, anzi di aver deciso di appoggiare la causa di indipendenza della regione.
